Job Purpose
To administer and motivate the Sunday School department in a manner that will result in growth, maturity and stability of the students and staff. Major focus will be placed on proper organization, quality instruction, student consecration, and numerical growth in the areas of Sunday School, Children’s Church, and Bus/ Van Ministry. In focusing upon these, you will
accomplish the main task of the Sunday School, this being “teaching” and “reaching.”
Job Qualifications

3. Must be loyal to the Pastor.
4. Must be willing to work in harmony with others.
5. Must carry a burden for the Sunday School Ministry.
6. Must be able to instill enthusiasm and excitement.
7. Must be able to lead and motivate staff.
8. Must be a lover of children.
9. Must be faithful and dependable in accomplishing duties.
10. Must have a knowledge of the operation/functions of the Sunday School.
Job Responsibilities
** Shall oversee and supervise all operations of the Sunday School under the direction of the Pastor. Shall seek to implement the program with tact, zeal and love.
** Shall mobilize and supervise all members of the Sunday School, Children’s Church, and Bus Ministry Staff.
** Shall oversee and supervise the Jr. Bible Quizzing program. This will be a future consideration and may be delegated to another.
** Shall arrive no later than one hour prior to beginning of Sunday School.
a. Sunday School begins at 10:00 a.m.
** Shall maintain, motivate and lead the Sunday morning teacher’s prayer/staff meeting (to begin at 9:15 am.)
a. Shall appoint one person to supervise early arrivals (bus & church children) so that they will not interfere with this prayer meeting.
** Shall dismiss this meeting in sufficient time for the teachers to perform last minute preparations (9:45 a.m.).
** Shall promote and maintain the teachers “Aim For Excellence” program.
a. The “Aim For Excellence” standard is set by the Pastor & Superintendent.
b. Photographs and names of Teachers that reach the “Aim For Excellence” standard are to be posted each month on the S. S. Bulletin Board.
c. Each teacher should fill one out each week (one form is used for one month) in full, regardless of how many teachers are in class.
d. The “Aim For Excellence” program is explained in the “Total Church Growth” binder.
** Shall keep the S. S. Bulletin Board or Aim For Excellence Board current , fresh, and up to date, changing colors and theme each quarter.
** Shall motivate all teachers to follow good absentee follow-up and child visitor follow-up practices each week. Guidelines of how this is to be done should be typed up and handed out.
** Shall make sure that the Sunday School facilities, rooms, equipment, and supplies are clean and in good repair.
a. Sunday School supply cabinet should be kept clean, well stocked, and care given to eliminate any waste.
** Shall maintain the Sunday School office in a neat and orderly manner.
a. On the Sunday School office wall, maintain a large line-graph of our Sunday School attendance for the year as well as a line to represent our S.S. goal.
** Shall strive to reach our Sunday School attendance goal each year. This annual goal should be divided into monthly goals. The monthly goals should be divided into class goals. Each Sunday
School class should have a realistic monthly goal to reach. If each class reaches their goals, then the S.S. as a whole should reach their goal also.
** Shall keep neat and accurate records of students, staff and attendance.
a. Hand in a weekly report to the Pastor of each class attendance, bus attendance, and then totals of attendance, absent, and offering.
** Shall plan a special Easter, Pentecost Sunday, and Christmas program in cooperation with the Pastor and Department Heads. To be planned at the Annual Planning Retreat each year.
** Shall plan at least four attendance promotions (one per quarter) to increase the Sunday School membership each year. Suggested times: Easter, Pentecost Sunday, Thrust Sunday, and Christmas.
a. Promotional suggestions: Enroll-to-Grow, Pack-a-Pew, Team Contests, Give-aways, Lucky Bucks, etc. The promotion should be able to involve adults as well as children.
** Shall see that all classes are sufficiently staffed with teachers, substitute teachers and secretaries.
a. Always have two or three teachers in training (as class assistants) to insure that you are not short staffed if a vacancy occurs.
** Shall assist any of the staff at any time with discipline problems concerning classes or persons within the class.
** Shall have a quarterly Sunday School Staff meeting, if possible on an off church night, to keep all informed of upcoming developments and promotions.
a. Should provide some teacher training at this time also.
** Shall provide a annual teacher training course, on an off-church night, unless a program is offered by the section or district. A different course is to be used each year (see your various publishing houses – Zondervan, Gospel Light, Broadman, Standard Publishing, Moody, P.P.H., etc.). This is to be an in-depth training session. To be planned and discussed at the annual
planning retreat.
a. Shall also provide and require each teacher to read one book on their student age level each year. Books are to be varied from different publishing houses (see suggestions above). Check with local Bible Book Store to order.
** Shall promote soulwinning as a major objective throughout the entire Sunday School through the means of a monthly Children’s Church.
a. Classes six years old and up to be combined and have an evangelistic service.
** Shall promote soulwinning as a major objective throughout the entire Sunday School through the means of a monthly “Holy Ghost Sunday”.
a. All teachers – primary through adult – will pray and fast that week. They will teach their lesson with one primary goal in mind: to give an altar call at the conclusion.
b. Teachers should prepare their own lesson this week, including visuals and handouts.
** Shall oversee the Bus / Van ministry, insuring that the vehicles are in running order and filled to a safe capacity. The major responsibility of supervision of this ministry will be delegated
to another, but you will insure its growth and effectiveness.
a. Shall promote and utilize the “Parentreach” concept of Bus Ministry as outlined in the “Total Church Growth” binder.
** Shall insure that all New Converts (and their children) are enrolled in a Sunday School Class. You will receive a copy of all altar cards for this purpose.
** Shall provide to the Pastor, when vacancies occur in your staff, a list of recommendations for replacement. Prospective teachers are NOT to be informed until pastoral approval is obtained.
** Shall plan an annual Sunday School Staff Banquet toward the end of each curriculum year. This is to include various awards and the giving of a “Teacher Of The Year” and “Bus Worker Of The Year” plaques.
Other Duties
** Shall work with the Pastor to select an assistant to help you in all aspects of your departmental duties.
** Shall be an example to the church in soulwinning by being continually involved in the Home Bible Study Ministry, or some other form of outreach ministry.
** Shall be an example to the church in faithfulness by attending all church services and special functions.
** Shall be an example to the church in spiritual growth by coming at least one-half hour before each service to pray.
** Shall attend all Annual Planning Retreats and Monthly Departmental Planning Councils.
** If unable to attend because of an emergency, shall inform the Pastor in advance and endeavor to have a substitute attend in your place.
** Shall hand in an official monthly report at the Monthly Staff Council.
** Shall endeavor to not schedule any departmental activities on Monday night. Monday will be known as “Family Night” and all church members are encouraged to stay home with their families on this night.
** Shall perform additional duties as required.
Organizational Relationships
The Sunday School Superintendent is responsible directly to the Pastor. Each year, the Pastor and Superintendent will review this Job Description, update and improve to make more applicable
to the position. Accountability shall consist of a monthly report of all Sunday School activities and upcoming events. The Superintendent is responsible for all Sunday School, Children’s Church, and Bus Ministry staff and personnel. The Superintendent shall work closely with all departments, but especially New Convert Care, Saturday Door Knocking, and Home Bible Study ministries. Evaluation of performance of this position shall be performed by the Pastor on an annual basis. The term of this office shall be for one year.

** Attend District Sunday School Seminar if possible.
** Read any additional book(s) provided by the Pastor.
