SEVEN SPIRITS OF REVIVAL
James Killgore
Hab. 3:2 Psalms 85:6
In every generation there has been that cry for revival – the realization that we are not as close to God as we should be – or would like to be. There is that gnawing feeling that we are coming up short – don’t measure up, don’t possess all that God intended us to possess. We live with a conviction that revival, restoration, coming up higher in our walk with God is for us, that God intends us to have it, and that if we will apply ourselves it can be had.
A. REVIVAL IS NOT A SERIES OF SERVICES.
1. We can have that and not have revival – In revival something
happens to the Church.
2. Revival is restoration, revitalization, returning.
3. There are some things that will bring this about – we must do.
I. SEVEN SPIRITS OF REVIVAL
A. SPIRIT OF PRAYER
1. II Chron. 7:14 – “If my people, which are called …”
a. Humble themselves – spirit of prayer will destroy pride.
b. Pray – Prayer that takes hold of horns of altar.
c. Seek my face – Real prayer seeks Him – He becomes the object of our
attaining – “that I might win Christ.”
d. Then will I hear.
2. I Thess. 5:17 – Pray without ceasing.
3. Have an attitude, atmosphere of prayer.
a. Strive for attitude of prayer.
b. Seek for a burden of prayer – A revival church will be a praying
church.
c. It is through prayer that we draw on the resources of God.
II. SPIRIT OF REPENTANCE
A. Acts. 2:37-38
1. They were pricked in their hearts – Peter said repent.
B. Conviction and repentance go hand in hand.
1. His Spirit convicts – we turn from.
C. Isaiah – woe is me – I am a man of unclean lips.
D. Attitude of heart searching – Search me, O God.
E. The Spirit of repentance will create an atmosphere where sin is
uncomfortable – If a sinner is comfortable in our midst, something
is wrong.
III. THE SPIRIT OF FORGIVENESS
A. Matt. 6:14-15
1. Puts the burden for my relationship with God on my shoulders –
directly affected by my relationship with fellow man.
B. How many times shall I forgive?
C. James 5:9 – Grudge not. Something wrong when we can’t forgive.
D. Unclog the well. An unforgiving spirit keeps God’s Spirit from
flowing in our lives.
IV. SPIRIT OF BROTHERLY LOVE
A. Romans 12:10 – Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly
love – in honor preferring one another.
B. To love as God loves, we must prefer.
C. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
D. First church was a caring church – concerned. I am my brother’s
keeper.
V. SPIRIT OF COOPERATION
A. Phil. 1:27 – Stand fast in one spirit with one mind striving
together for the faith of the gospel.
B. Whoever is leading we will follow.
C. The more threads a rope has the stronger it is.
D. Gideon’s army – every man in his place.
E. Unity of purpose – light from candelabra – orchestra – one sound.
VI. SPIRIT OF BURDEN FOR THE LOST
A. Matt. 9:36 – But when He saw the multitude He was moved with
compassion on them.
B. To have compassion, we must have love for.
C. See them as sheep without a shepherd.
D. Paul – City of Athens – saw whole city given to idolatry. His
spirit was stirred within him, moved to action.
E. A burden will move us to action.
VII. FRESH BAPTISM OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD
A. Hosea 10:12 – Sow to yourselves in righteousness. Reap in mercy;
break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord til he
comes and rain righteousness upon you.
B. Acts 2:17 – I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh.
C. Must be continuous.
1. On saints – constant renewing, refreshing.
2. On sinners.
D. When people enter the church – God’s Spirit moves on them, they
cannot resist it. (They don’t want to resist it.)
