Staffing Your Bus Ministry For Growth

Allen Morton

Jesus said in Jn. 15:11 “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my Name, He may give it you.” Jesus said in Mk. 14:34-36 “For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house and gave authority to his servants and to every man his work and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, Lest coming suddenly he find-you sleeping.” II Tim. 2:19-21 “The Lord knoweth them that are His. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honor and some to dishonor. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.”

BUS
CAPTAIN— Is to keep the bus behavior in order at all times. Be flexible enough to take over duties as the bus secretary and the bus song leader in case of absences of one or both of those positions.

You are to work with your bus ministry group in setting up a time for home visitations as a group or by two’s. Visit the rider’s that did not come on Sunday and then canvas new homes for Jesus along the way. Making house visits and getting to know the parents is very important. Good friendships keep the doors open for Bible studies.

BUS
DRIVE—- You are a very important part of the Bus Ministry. Without you we cannot move. We are in your hands behind the wheel. You are to pick up the secretary first on Sunday mornings at eight o’clock sharp. There will be no need to pick up the bus captain seeing that he will be at the bus terminal and have left with you prior to picking up the bus secretary. If it takes fifteen minutes to arrive at the bus secretary’s house and the bus captain has not yet arrived at the terminal, then you are to proceed at seven forty five. The bus captain will have to meet you along the way at one of your stops.

In order to be on schedule at the church we must maintain a time schedule with our bus ministry. We are going to see the bus ministry grow by following an organized plan.

BUS
SECRETARY— It is very important that you maintain all attendance on the bus. Make visitor attendance sheets out in triplicate and make a guest card out. One copy you will keep for your attendance records, one copy you will give to the student to give to the teacher and one copy you will give to the bus ministry director. The guest card you will give to the Sunday School Director. All attendance sheets are to include the grade that the child is now attending in his or her public or private school. You are also to include their parents name(s) and any other important information like they are a friend of or relative of. Use back door when picking up on Sundays, etc..

You are to call all the rider’s on Sunday morning to be sure who is going to be coming. Make a list of names for those who will not be coming on that morning and give that list to the bus captain and in
turn he will tell the driver what stops are not to be picked up on that particular morning. Make sure that all calls are made early enough to insure that all stops (rider’s) will be ready at the arrival
of the bus.

Be flexible enough to take over as the bus captain and the bus song leader in case of absences in one or both of those positions.

BUS
SONG-LEADER— Motivate the children to sing. Try new songs that can be easily sung. Use song charts that are simple and that will lend themselves in helping the children to follow a song. Remember Psalms
100:1-5 we are to make a joyful noise and we are to serve the Lord with a gladness and we are to always know that we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. In so knowing all this we should enter His
courts with praise, being thankful and blessing His Name, the Name that is above every name. Rev. 5:9 tells us that one day we will sing a new song saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the
seals thereof: Sometimes it is hard to sing at the start of the morning but think of those who cannot talk or hear and how they would desire and cherish even if just for those few minutes.

Be flexible enough to take over the duties as the bus secretary in case of absence of that position.

BUS
WORKER— Be alert to every stop and approach every door with enthusiasm. Do not be reluctant to knock on the door if you get no response with ringing the door bell. Maybe the bell does not work.

Walk the children to the bus and watch for traffic, taking a small child’s hand if necessary.

Psalms 84:10-“For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”

If for any reason a Bus Captain, Bus Driver, Bus Secretary, Bus Song Leader or a Bus Worker knows that they will be absent on the Sunday coming up (from the bus) Please inform the bus ministry director at
least 3 days in advance or sooner, so that changes and arrangements can be made for a replacement for that Sunday.

Unless it would be a last minute emergency but please call the bus ministry director so he knows you will not be there, and can hopefully make last minute arrangements to fill that absence.

We will only see our bus ministry grow when we work with each other and most importantly, with God. Psalms 127:1-“Except the Lord build the house they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”
