The Mighty God
By S. G. Norris
This article is written with a sincere desire to defend and explain one of the greatest of all Biblical truths-“THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD.” (Deut. 6:4) In our humble opinion the Bible either stands or falls on this significant truth. “Hear, 0 Israel, the Lord our God is ONE LORD.” The Bible is the Word of God -one God- not the word of “gods.”
There can be only ONE TRUE AND LIVING LORD GOD. Jesus verified this in Mark 12:29 when He answered the question, “Which is the first commandment of all?” asked by one of the scribes. He stamped this never-to-be-forgotten truth forever in the New Testament the same as it had been engraved upon pages of the Old Testament. Jesus’ answer was, “THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD.”
Isaiah left this testimony, “Thus saith the Lord…I am the first and I am the last; and beside me there is no God…Fear ye not, neither be afraid…Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.” This, then, is our true premise and foundation “THERE IS BUT ONE LORD” and if that foundation be destroyed, “what can the righteous do?”
There is much confusion in the church world as to WHO IS THE TRUE GOD. Many claim that there is a “trinity” of persons in the Godhead, although there is no such word in the entire Bible. Some think there are at least “two persons”, and there are still other thousands that are honest yet bewildered, even as Philip. Philip loved Jesus yet did not understand who Jesus was. They are asking with Philip of old, “Lord, shew us the Father and it sufficeth us.” This booklet will explain who the Father was, and where He was. Please read it with prayerful consideration.
Many are willing to concede that Jesus Christ was the “second Person” in the Godhead or some part of the mysterious “trinity” but when He makes such statements as “ALL POWER is given ME, both in heaven and in earth,” and, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, THE ALMIGHTY,” many draw back, fearing that Jesus overstepped His authority. Let us see.
God Appears In Angelic Form
Jesus stated in St. John 4:24 that “God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth.” We also find in Genesis 1:2 that the “Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Now we know that a spirit cannot be seen unless it possesses a body, so we have pictured a cloud (Fig. 1) to represent the Spirit of God. You will note that it is shaded, so that you can easily trace this shading in subsequent pictures as we progress with this study of “The Mighty God in Christ.” It will always represent the Spirit of God. God (the Spirit) had to be manifested in order to be seen. It is an undeniable fact that the Spirit of God had no PERMANENT BODY during the Old Testament period. (Heb. 10:5) Therefore, He had to reveal Himself to Israel and the prophets “at sundry times and in divers manners” in order to be understood. (Heb. 1:1)
God appeared in angelic form in the Garden of Eden, walking and talking with Adam and Eve. After they had sinned, He drove them from the Garden and withdrew to heaven. From that time His appearances were comparatively few, because sin had separated Him from man whom He had made to be pure and holy. Nevertheless, He did appear, and we shall consider, first of all, His angelic form which was used the most frequently of any.
This angel of the Lord should not be confused with the appearance of other angels. God used this angelic body as a temporary dwelling place in order that man might understand Him. It was this angel of the Lord that appeared to Abraham and guided the children of Israel. To them he was the “angel of the covenant.” He was the angel who, by the brook Peniel, wrestled with Jacob and put his thigh out of joint. He appeared to Moses, Joshua, Gideon, and others using this
angelic form, or body, to manifest Himself during the Old Testament times. Many drawings and paintings picture this angel of the Lord with wings, but in reality there were no wings attached to that angelic body.
Abraham Entertains Three “Men”
You will please note in Genesis 18:2 that Abraham entertained three “men.” If you read this entire chapter carefully and also the first verse of chapter 19, you will observe that Abraham was actually visited by none other than the Lord God, Himself in an angelic body, accompanied by two angels. These two angels were sent on to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah after they had delivered Lot and his family. (Gen. 19:1) God (the Spirit) occupied the angelic body for that particular time and made Himself known to Abraham. In the 18th chapter we find the memorable plea of Abraham in which he addressed that angelic presence of God as the “JUDGE OF ALL THE Earth,” and finally obtained His promise that if only TEN righteous were found in Sodom and Gomorrah, the cities would be spared.
Angels look like men and have NO wings as is further substantiated in Heb. 13:2. Here Paul warned not to forget to entertain strangers for thereby “some have entertained angels unawares.”
Jacob Wrestles With The Angel Of The Lord
Genesis 32:24, 29, 30
“And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a MAN with him until the breaking of the day…and Jacob asked him and said, Tell me, I pray thee, they name…And he blessed him there. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen GOD FACE TO FACE, and life is preserved.”
This, again, was God (the Spirit) manifested in an angelic body. To prove this beyond a shadow of a doubt, note verse 30. Jacob stated, “I have seen God face to face.” Jacob was seeking the Name of the Lord and therefore God blessed him. The Lord will bless anyone who seeks to know His real Name and identity. Surely, we dare not say that God, Who was in that angel, was ONE PERSON, and the angel’s body was ANOTHER PERSON, making TWO “persons.” The only rational conclusion that could be drawn is that Jacob wrestled with God (God is a Spirit) and saw Him face to face IN THE PERSON OR BODY OF THAT ANGEL. God was in the angel wrestling Jacob unto Himself. Why, then, is it so difficult to understand that God (the Spirit) was in Christ reconciling the world and all the “lost Jacobs” that would believe on His Name unto Himself? (St. John 1:12)
It will not be found in the entire Bible that God appeared or manifested Himself in more than ONE PERSON at any one time. If God had possessed a human BODY, His various manifestations during Old Testament times would have been superfluous. We must remember that God is a Spirit and that His Essential, Eternal Being was not visible. (Col. 1:15) it was imperative, therefore, that He manifest Himself, first to be seen of man, and secondly that His glory might be covered or tabernacle. Had it not been, men would have died when standing before HIS HOLY PRESENCE.
Moses At The Burning Bush
“God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.” (Exodus 3:4) After warning Moses to remove his shoes because the place where he stood was HOLY GROUND (because of God’s presence), He told Moses of His plan to send him to Pharaoh of Egypt, and demand that he let God’s people (Israel) go.
Moses knew that this was a gigantic task, and it would necessitate special power and authority from God. For this reason, He asked God to reveal His Name to him that he might have the authority of the NAME of God when asked by the children of Israel, “WHAT IS HIS NAME?”
“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and He said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” (Exodus 3:13, 14.)
That Name-“I AM” was the NAME of God as originally expressed to Moses by God from the burning bush. Strange to say, the NAME, “I AM,” which expressed the unchangeable BEING and faithfulness of the EVER PRESENT God, was not used by either Moses or Israel to express the Name of their God. The Name of God, “I AM,” was feared and reverenced so highly that it was believed that GOD ALMIGHTY as the EVER PRESENT BEING, alone, dare utter or express that Name, and that no Jew dare “utter” (or blaspheme) the Name of God (“I AM”), under penalty of death by stoning.
We find in Leviticus 24:10-16, a son of an lsraelitish woman striving with another man of Israel, and in the heat of their brawl, so far forgetting himself that he “uttered” (or blasphemed) that sacred Name of the Lord. This was such an unheard of crime that… “they put him in ward, that the mind of the Lord might be shewed them.” (Lev. 24:12) Moses was ordered by the Lord that “all the congregation shall certainly stone him” for blaspheming or “uttering” the Name of the Lord, which was originally expressed to Moses in the burning bush as “I AM.”
You will please note in Exodus 20:7 that taking “the name of the Lord thy God in vain” was an altogether different transgression, and the judgment was “for the Lord will not hold him guiltless,” but the offender was NOT to be stoned.
This detailed explanation of the Name, “I AM” which God revealed to Moses at the burning bush (signifying His EVER-PRESENT UNCHAGEABLE BEING, which meant nothing less than the Great God Almighty, and which Name the Jews believed was only allowed to be “uttered” by the Lord God, Himself) has great import and meaning when we consider the words in St. John 8:53-59, “Then said the Jews unto Him, Art thou greater than our father Abraham…whom makest thou thyself?…Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, BEFORE ABRAHAM WAS, I AM!”
You can readily see that here Jesus declared that he was “I AM,” which meant nothing less than that He was the EVER-PRESENT GOD OF THE BURNING BUSH. The Jews, of course, would not believe this, and thought Him guilty of blasphemy, not only of “uttering” the Name, but also declaring that He was the “I AM.” We will see in the following text, how this could be.
You may ask, if the Jews believed this Name of God (“I AM”) had been forbidden to be used by them, WHAT NAME WERE they permitted to use, and by what Name did they recognize the ONLY TRUE AND LIVING GOD? It is evident that the Name, “Lord,” was used and expressed by them when praying or referring to God Almighty. Israel was given the first commandment. “Hear, 0 Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord.” This is confirmed in both the Old and New Testaments. (Deut. 6:4; Mark 12:29) in 1 Kings 18:39 the children of Israel acknowledged the Name of their true God as “Lord.” They had been worshipping false gods under the wicked influence of Ahab and Jezebel, but when Elijah prayed and the fire fell form heaven to confirm his prayer…”Hear me, 0 Lord, hear me that his people may know that thou art the Lord God.”…then they said, “The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is God.” When Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9:1-5) wanted to be absolutely sure that the voice that spoke to him from heaven was the ONLY TRUE AND LIVING GOD of the Hebrews, he cried, “Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am JESUS.”
The Lord’s Glory Cloud
The Lord not only used an angelic form to present HIMSELF to Israel, but also, a mysterious GLORY CLOUD. God’s GLORY and presence was manifested in this cloud, and to Israel, it represented the Lord. Its undefined form proved that the “seed of the woman” (Genesis 3:15), their long looked-for Messiah, had not yet come.
The GLORY CLOUD OR PILLAR was the symbol of God’s presence with Israel, and it guided them from dark Egypt to the Promised Land. At night, this glory of God’s presence was revealed vividly when it shone brightly as a pillar of fire. “And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.” (Exodus 13:21, 22)
This GLORY CLOUD sheltered them during the day from the heat of the hot eastern sun and its fire shone forth at night, symbolizing God’s purity and power an encouragement to Israel and a solemn warning to their enemies. Whenever the GLORY CLOUD stopped, there Israel pitched its tabernacle and camped. This CLOUD was their guide and leader for God was in it.
From time to time the GLORY CLOUD (shekinah) rested over the mercy seat of the ark in the tabernacle, and from this GLORY CLOUD or PILLAR, God talked to Moses. (Exodus 33:9) “And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with Him (God), then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims.” (Numbers 7:89)
Paul writes concerning this GLORY CLOUD…”Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the CLOUD, and all passed through the sea; and were all baptized unto Moses in the CLOUD and in the sea.” (1 Corinthians 10:1, 2) This was Israel’s type of being “BORN AGAIN” of water and THE SPIRIT. He definitely places this GLORY CLOUD PRESENCE in Jesus Christ when he states, “Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the LORD of GLORY.” (1 Corinthians 2:8) The presence or Spirit of God which was hid in that GLORY CLOUD, finally dwelt (tabernacle) in Jesus Christ, for it was He whom the princes of this world crucified.
The Incarnation of God
Right at this point, many become confused. Please remember that God is a Spirit, and that it was necessary for God to manifest Himself in temporary ways (angelic presence, glory cloud, et cetera) during Old Testament times in order to be seen, but, in reality, He had no PERMANENT BODY. In order to save man from sin, it was imperative that He manifest the fullness of His diving Being, which was Spirit, in a Body or Son (“without shedding of blood is no remission”). This was to become His PERMANENT BODY or Tabernacle. If God, the Father, was a PERSON with a bodily form such as we have been told to believe, then the Bible is confusion, because it definitely states that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was found with child of the Holy Ghost, i.e., the Spirit of God. (Matthew 1:18.) Thus, we see that the Father of Jesus was the HOLY GHOST, or the Holy Spirit. In Luke 1:30-35, we read that the angel Gabriel said to Mary, “Fear not, Mary, for thou has found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.”…”Then said Mary, How shall this be…? And the angel answered and said unto her, THE HOLY GHOST shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore, also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”
God did not remain in heaven and send a Son, the second Person in the Godhead, to earth. He was right here HIMSELF, GOD WITH US. (Matthew 1:23.) Let us analyze that wonderful Scripture in St. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Some would have us believe that there was an “old Father God” (I write with reverence) up in heaven looking down upon sinful humanity until He could endure it no longer, and turning to a Son by His side, He said, “Jesus, I love them so YOU go down and suffer on the cross because I love them so.” Let me state emphatically, that would NOT be love. For example, suppose that my son and I should be walking along the bank of a river, when suddenly, some person falls in to the water. Hesitatingly, I watch him struggling for his life, and, then, I frantically cry out to my son, “Oh, I am so sorry for that man; I cannot watch him drown; son, YOU jump in the water and save him because I love that man so!” You could rightfully accuse me of being insincere, for had I not been, I would have leaped in, myself, to save the drowning man.
Abraham spoke prophetically when he told Isaac, in answer to his son’s question as to where the sacrifice was, “My son, God will provide Himself a Lamb.” And that is just exactly what God did. He overshadowed the virgin Mary, and through her, His SPIRIT entered (at birth, not at Jordan, when Jesus was baptized) into the Body or Son, Jesus Christ. Of a truth, THE MIGHTY GOD WAS IN CHRIST JESUS. Jesus was NOT just a man filled with the baptism of the Holy
Spirit, or blessed with the presence of God, like the prophets of the Old Testament. The fullness of that wonderful presence of the Lord’s SPIRIT BEING, not just a part of it, was incarnated in the body of Jesus Christ and flowed out from Him. Read St. John 3:34, “For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.” The Spirit of God had blessed in times past, and holy men of old spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost, but in the instance of Jesus Christ, not just a PART was given Him, but he possessed God’s Spirit in fullness, WITHOUT MEASURE. The Lord Jesus was that Spirit incarnated. Paul tells us in Colossians 1:15-19 that Jesus was the IMAGE (or Body) of the invisible God (of Father)…”For it pleased the Father that in him (Jesus Christ) should all fullness dwell.” Again, in Colossians 2:9, “For in him dwelleth ALL THE FULLNESS of the Godhead bodily.”
1 Timothy 3:16, “And without controversy great is the MYSTERY of godliness: God was MANIFEST in the FLESH, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
Some get confused when they try to picture God as a PERSON, with a PERMANENT BODILY PRESENCE in the Old Testament, but Jesus told the woman at the well that “God is a Spirit.” That Spirit, by the immaculate conception, entered and tabernacled in the body of His Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ was either God manifested in the flesh, or an imposter. He was none other than the Lord God, here on earth in a body. This body was to be His permanent abiding place throughout the ages to come. Isaiah confirms this, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called WONDERFUL, CONSELLOR, THE MIGHTY GOD, THE EVERLASTING FATHER, THE PRINCE OF PECE.”
If you take away the absolute DEITY and incarnation of the DIVINGE BEING (God, the Spirit) from the Lord Jesus Christ, then you cause the Bible to crumble, and our HOPE OF SALVATION to perish.
Thou, Being a Man, Makest Thyself God
Israel, as a nation, would not believe that God was in Christ, even though He healed their sick, walked on water, rebuked the winds and waves, fed thousands with a few loaves and fish, cast out devils, opened the eyes of the blind, and raised the dead. When He asked them, “For which of my good works do ye stone me?” they replied, “For your good works, we stone thee not, BUT YOU BEING A MAN MAKEST THYSELF GOD.” And so, the battle still goes on today over the DEITY of Jesus Christ. Jesus was constantly trying to teach and show His disciples that He was the Messiah (God’s anointed Body or Son). We have a record in all three gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) of His TRANSFIGURATION. “And he was transfigured before them, and his face did SHINE as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.” There Jesus gave Peter, James, and John a little glimpse of HIS TRUE IDENTITY, or what DWELT IN HIM-that wonderful Spirit of God, which He always called His Father. John, on the Isle of Patmos, received another glimpse of Him and, “fell at his feet as dead.” (Rev. 1:17.) The passion of Jesus’ life was to convince His followers that He was the Messiah-the Son or Body of God, i.e., God’s anointed Body.
Where was the Father when Jesus was on Earth?
“Philip saith unto him, Lord shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.” Jesus answered this question very clearly when he stated, “The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.” (St. John 14:8, 14)
His disciples did not understand until the Day of Pentecost, who He really was. Jesus said, “I shall shew you PLAINLY of the Father.” (St. John 16:25, 26) In other words, “You will know THEN that the Father, or Spirit, is IN ME, and I, in Him.”
As long as the Holy Ghost was poured out, and the apostles lived, there was no question that Jesus Christ was the Lord. But afterwards, men began reasoning from their natural (carnal) minds. It was then that the mystery of God in Christ became an enigma as well as many other
Apostolic truths. Not having the Holy Ghost to guide them, men soon plunged into the worship of a TRINITY OF GODS, as outlined by the Council of Nicea, A.D. 325. This was man’s reasoning, of course, and not the Holy Spirit’s leading.
The reason that many do not understand this unique ONENESS of the Lord Jesus Christ with God, the Spirit, or Father, is because they have not actually received the Holy Ghost the BIBLE WAY. (Acts 2:4) Those that have received this experience, quickly understand that Jesus was BOTH Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36) if they are permitted of their own free will to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.
Jesus said, “When He, the Spirit of TRUTH is come, He shall glorify ME,” and, again, “He shall testify of ME, and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.” The very first message that Peter preached, after being filled with the Holy Spirit, was on the Day of Pentecost. (That was three hundred years before the Church Council of Nicea. His message (Acts 2:36) was that God, the SPIRIT, had “highly exalted” and was proclaimed by all New Testament writers-that the ETERNAL Spirit and BEING which the Jews knew as “Lord” dwelt in HIM.
When the Jews heard Peter’s message, and knew that the blood of bulls and goats would no longer avail for remission of sins, they cried, “Men and brethren, WHAT SHALL WE DO?” It was then that the purest, sweetest, most unbiased, and God-fearing doctrine that ever passed the lips of man was spoken by Peter, who had been given the KEYS, as he opened the door of the KINGDOM OF GOD, when he said, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 2:38)
The apostles knew at Pentecost that the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost was the LORD JESUS CHRIST and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in HIS NAME. That is why, in every instance, they baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, or Lord, or Lord Jesus. Some part of that wonderful Name of the Lord Jesus had to be used to make baptism valid. They also prayed for the sick in the Name of the Lord (Jesus), and instructed all men to call upon the NAME of the Lord in order to receive the Holy Ghost.
The Great Difference
The difference between THE ALMIGHTY GOD IN CHRIST and His various appearances during Old Testament times, such as an angelic being, glory cloud, et cetera, was this-those manifestations were temporary ones by which God appeared to men. However, in the fullness of time when He was ready to appear on earth for the salvation and redemption of man, “It behooved him to be made like unto his brethren.”…”Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same.” (Hebrews 2:14-17)
The Holy Ghost (or God, the Spirit) overshadowed Mary and through her formed His Body or Son in which to dwell. Jesus had NO FATHER but GOD, THE SPIRIT, or HOLY GHOST. When He was born at Bethlehem, he was “GOD WITH US.” In St. John 20:21, 22, He tried to show them that He was the incarnation of the Holy Spirit (His Father), “As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you”… “He breathed on them, and saith unto them, RECEIVE YE THE HOLY GHOST.” In other words, “My breath is my life, and that breath is the Spirit of My Father, and you will receive that breath (the Holy Ghost) by which you will be sent forth.” On the day of Pentecost, it came as a rushing mighty wind. (Acts 2:2)
Jesus did NOT receive the Holy Ghost at Jordan when baptized by John. He was the embodiment or incarnation of the Holy Ghost. He was Emmanuel -God with us- from birth. What took place at Jordan was to confirm to John the Baptist that Jesus was God’s Anointed, the true High Priest, ready to minister to lost humanity. Please read St. John. 1:31-34.The scene at Jordan was also to fulfill the law of righteousness. A priest under the law of Moses dare not minister in the tabernacle until he had reached the age of thirty. At that time, he was washed and anointed with oil -a type of the Holy Ghost. It was also an example of our having to be immersed in water and filled with the Spirit before we can become the true disciples of the Lord.
On the cross, He was God as the LAMB, shedding His blood for our sins. As He hung there, He went through the agony and despair of a lost soul, dying without God. The weight of condemnation and the sins of the world were upon HIM. He became SIN for us, who knew NO
Sin. “The Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isa. 53:6) He was made to feel as if God had forsaken Him, and cried, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me.” After this He gave away His mother to the keeping of John, the beloved, and finally said, “It is finished: and he bowed his head and gave up the Ghost,” i.e., dismissed His Spirit.
I Am the First And The Last
He was put to death in the FLESH, but QUICKENED by the Spirit. On the third day He arose, and declared that He controlled ALL POWER, both in heaven and in earth. Now you can understand how the Son (or Body) that was born in Bethlehem some nineteen hundred years ago could be the EVERLASTING FATHER. God, the Father, raised Him from the dead by REENTERING the body of Jesus, and made Jesus Christ HIS PERMANENT DWELLING PLACE.” It pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell.” (Colossians 1:19)
After forty days on earth, Jesus ascended to heaven. In Revelation 1:17, 18, He spoke to John, “Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore.” He was FIRST because the Spirit of God, which existed from the beginning, PERMANENTLY dwells in Him, NEVER to leave that BODY again. He was LAST because there NEVER will be any other PERMANENT BODY OR PERSON in which God’s Spirit will manifest itself. In heaven, the only God you will ever see is the Lord Jesus.
That Spirit, or the Holy Ghost, which Jesus referred to as His father and that BODY of Jesus (the Son) are INSEPARABLE. No more do we have to be confused about divers manifestations of God. Jesus earned the right through His obedience, even to death on the cross, to be the permanent dwelling-place of God. Therefore, there is still only ONE LORD and His name ONE. The apostles understood this -that God was in Christ- and that the NAME of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost was the Lord Jesus Christ, so that when they baptized in water for the REMISSION of sins, they always used all or a part of that wonderful Name, sometimes, “Jesus Christ,” again, “Lord Jesus,” and again, “Lord,” but NEVER…”In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”
The mystery of WHO Jesus became very clear at the day of Pentecost (Acts 2) when they received the Holy Ghost. Then it was understood that “God, who, at sundry times and in divers manners, spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these days spoken unto us by his Son,” and that this same Jesus was BOTH Lord and Christ. “He that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father ALSO.” (1 John 2:23) Therefore, our conclusion is this, “That the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may KNOW him that is true, and we are IN him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ.
“THIS IS THE TRUE GOD, AND ETERNAL LIFE.”
